Written very well, provides helpful biblical references. I found it interesting that although this was written well over a century ago most of the issues of concern - obstacles to prayer - are very similar to current issues of concern. It's an easy, quick read. I am trying to learn to be better at my prayer and meditation time and I thought this was a helpful guide.Product details

I love Mr. Torrey's books as they are usually comprehensive and completely Word based. I didn't know much about this book, but bought it because of the author. I must say that it has been a great blessing to me. It covers various aspects of prayer from the biblical standpoint and removes some misconceptions about prayer. This is one of those books I would always like to have close to me and would recommend to any other Christian who wants to work on their prayer life.
Very insightful, and easy to read. I was pleasantly surprised by it not being the same oh same oh, dry book on prayer. if you, in your heart are really searching and wanting a deeper prayer life, this book will be a good asset to your library. Chapter 2, page30, through 32 hit me hard and was the beginning of the beginning for me in my praying. The truth and insight he brought IN 2 simple words, "UNTO GOD", MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.
get the book get your bible, take your time and let it soak in. I'm going to look for more of his work. I've been told they are excellent. I've heard several very influential pastors quote R.A. Torrey since I started reading him.
This is an excellent classic on prayer written over a century ago. It communicates the purpose, privilege, and power of prayer. The person who is a Christian will benefit by understanding how to live "the new life in Christ" on a daily basis. As the person is transformed from the inside out to reflect the beauty and glory of the resurrected Jesus the Christ (Messiah) there is a real "putting on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him," Colossians 310. This includes putting on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other just as the Lord forgave you. And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the message of love whereby God is reconciling the broken world to Himself. So, the person who is not a Christian will also benefit from reading this book.
This little book kept taking me back to God's Word. I think I've read it four times now. I plan on using this as soon as I can write up a curriculum. The way the book takes you back to the Word of aged is what held me. You can't go wrong with this one.
This book though written in a different era is still greatly relevant to this age and would in my view be always timeless. It mirrors the way God moves in our society- a few people dedicated to seeking the hand of God, laboring in prayer kindle a revival, but first they must first develop a life of prayer.
This book lays the charge of revival soundly at the individual's doorstep, it charges the individual to lead a life that connects to God in prayer so that there is a vessel to pour out God's work to society at large. The reliance on prayer as a God chosen path to not just personal growth but societal change deeply resonates with me and I will recommend this book to everyone interested in seeing God's hand in this ever tumultuous world.
I did not fully realize the great depth and magnitude of the power of prayer before reading this book. The act of prayer goes beyond a dinner time grace-like prayer to God. It demands a totally uninterrupted seeking of God outside of a few shallow words followed by amen. This teaching tool on 'How to Pray' has certainly opened my eyes to what it means to pray fervently (with prayer and supplications) and more frequently even without a set organized time for prayer. As I complete this book, we are in the third and final week of a 21 Day Consecration through my church where we are seeking God for various reasons during this set time. Many of us in the church have bought this book as a guide to prayer and to learn just what it means to seek God diligently in season and out of season as some have put it. After the praying and fasting days are completed, we can still continue with the same mind set for praying especially for the lost. There is no limit on the amount of time you can spend before the Lord on behalf of others as well as for yourself. 'How to Pray' is a wonderful prayer guide, Godly inspired and is timeless!!!
I recently downloaded this book to supplement my church's Bible study in prayer. I caught myself double-checking the date of publication because this is such an easy read! Often times, when reading older literature, I find myself stumbling over outdated vocabulary and obscure metaphors. With the exception of a few funny adjectives here and there, this book is fresh and spot-on!
Besides the easy readability, this book is relevant to today's Christian just like it was back then. Torrey takes passages in the Bible to form his points on a healthy prayer life. He doesn't use annoying illustrations that somehow convey his points better than any Scripture would and I love that. He does give a few examples of wrong thinking and why it's unbiblical. I can't tell you how many times I was pronounced guilty in this book when referring to improper thoughts and motives in prayer. This book has really changed my prayer life and it will be staying in my library for easy access!
I also encourage this as a guide if a group of people want to study prayer together. The chapter divisions are nice, manageable weekly topics. Torrey leaves a lot of room to discuss things which makes this an ideal group study. Great book. Give it a try!
